Sharold earned his Bachelor of Science degree from NDSU in 1963. He recieved his MED with a major in Addiction Counseling in 1986 from NDSU. Sharold has 19 years experience working at ND State Hospital as an addiction counselor before retiring in 2005. He developed the treatment protocol for the 100 day program at the Tompkins Rehabilitation Center. He ranched in the Hazen area until 1979 returning, to his roots in retirement. He has 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Sharold has been in recovery since October 1979. Sharold and Darlene White co-direct the Intensive Outpatient Program at Heart River Alcohol and Drug.
